南島最大の町クライストチャーチは、南島中部の東海岸側に広がるカンタベリー平野に位置する美しい町です。初期のイギリス人移民が理想国家を築こうとして定住を開始したのがこの町の始まりです。町は19世紀に建てられた大聖堂を中心に広がり、町中を流れるエイボン川、ハグレー公園などイギリス的な光景が目に入ります。また、住宅地にある各家のガーデンの美しさは、まさに「The Garden City」という敬称に納得します。オークランドの国際色豊かなイメージに対して、ここはイギリス色の強い美しい町ですが街中にはモダンでおしゃれなカフェやレストランが並びコンパクトで生活のし易い町です。カンタベリー大学をはじめポリテクニック、英語学校など数多くの学校が運営されています。一年を通して雨量が少なく、夏に気温が30度を超えることは殆どなく、冬は市内に雪が降ることはありません。
